What is EN131?

Table of Contents

EN131 is a safety and technical standard for ladder products developed by the European Committee for Standardization. The standard covers ladder types, design features, dimensional requirements, material requirements, load-bearing and stability, technical requirements, marking information and so on. And the new standard introduces the “use” classification.

The European standard EN 131 specifies the minimum and maximum criteria that must be met for the characteristics of ladders, and the label “EN 131” will only appear on the marking of a particular ladder if all the requirements of the EN 131 standard applicable to that type of ladder are met.

How is EN131 classified?

In the standard ladders are classified as “EN131 professional” for use in the workplace, and “EN131 non-professional” for use by home users.

Our Jadduo ladders have to meet the new EN131 standard, where applicable, with ladders having a load capacity of 150kg.

What is the content of EN131 test

For standard  ladders, EN131 includes (but not limited to) the following tests:

-Structural design

-Surface treatment

-Folding bolt test

-Opening range

-Step number spacing test

-Step test

-Anti-slip test

-Extension test

-Stability test

-Load bearing test

-Material toxicity test

-Labeling audit

-The corresponding accessory test for some.

Providing they can pass these tests, the ladders will be deemed worthy of EN131 certification.

What are the requirements of EN 131 standard?

The load capacity including tools is 150 kg.

EN 131 standard does not apply to step stools to which EN 14183 standard applies

Tread depth must be at least 20 mm

A rising support with a surface equal to or greater than 80 mm is technically known as a “step”, although commercially it is often referred to as a “wide step”. Rising supports of less than 80 mm cannot be called in this way

The distance between steps or steps must be uniform, with a permissible deviation of ± 2 mm
